Warmup
Age of Empires IV Warmup Routine Before You Queue Ranked
Queuing cold into ranked is how you drop MMR on a build you half remember. A short Age of Empires IV warmup — even ten to fifteen minutes — makes your first real game feel like your third.
Why your first match should not be the warmup
Most players launch ranked, pick a civilization from memory, and lose because their villagers idled twice. Hands are cold, hotkeys feel wrong, and scout timing is late. Treat warmup as part of the session, not optional fluff.
Skirmish drills, build-order trainers, and one unranked game exist so your ladder MMR is not the experiment.
A simple 15-minute routine that scales
Minutes 1–5: run your main build order twice with no opponents — focus on villager queue and age timing. Minutes 6–10: practice control groups and camera jumps between economy and army. Minutes 11–15: one skirmish or team game where you only work one habit, like earlier military production or cleaner wall placement.
Keep the routine identical for a week so improvements are measurable. Rotate civilizations later — after the habit sticks.
What to do right before you queue
Confirm patch notes if balance just dropped, skim cheat status if you use overlays after an update, and pick a civilization from your practiced pool. Pair warmup with settings and unit counters so you are not reinventing the plan every night.
If the first two ranked games feel mechanical, stop queueing and repeat five minutes of build-order practice. Tilt-queueing is not a strategy.
